Super Duplex Tubes for Severe Corrosion Service

Super duplex stainless steel heat exchanger tubes combine high alloy content, very high mechanical strength and strong resistance to localized corrosion for demanding heat-transfer applications.

They are commonly considered where operating conditions involve high chloride exposure, seawater or aggressive process media and where conventional stainless steel or standard duplex grades may not provide sufficient corrosion performance.

Material selection should consider:

Process fluid chemistry · Chloride concentration · Operating temperature · Design pressure · Pitting and crevice corrosion risk · Stress corrosion cracking risk · Required mechanical strength · Applicable material standard · Heat treatment · Inspection requirements

S32750/1.4410 is specifically documented for aggressive chloride-containing conditions, including seawater cooling, desalination, refineries and petrochemical applications. S32760/1.4501 is likewise positioned by manufacturers for highly corrosive service and applications including desalination, seawater systems and heat exchangers.

Common Super Duplex Tube Standards

ASTM A789 / ASME SA789

ASTM A789/A789M-24 is the active ASTM specification for seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic stainless steel tubing. It covers average-wall tubing and also minimum-wall tubing when specified on the order; tubes are furnished heat treated and are subject to specified mechanical and NDE/hydrostatic requirements.

EN 10216-5

Seamless stainless steel tubes for pressure purposes. S32750 tube/pipe supplier data lists EN 10216-5 as an applicable seamless tube/pipe product standard.

ASTM A790 / ASME SA790

ASTM A790/A790M-24 covers seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic stainless steel pipe, so it should remain secondary on this heat-exchanger tubing page.
